Recent sub-zero temperatures have caused chaos round the country over the past few weeks, but it did not stop Rose Hill Westonbirt pupils enjoying their weekly outdoor education class!

Students wrapped up warm and spent the allocated double lesson in the Spinney, Rose Hill Westonbirt's outdoor education area. Photographs below show Year 1 toasting marshmallows and Year 6 toasting and eating crumpets in their den during the lesson. Students had a brilliant time and felt very lucky that they were able to spend time outside despite of the weather.

Outdoor education is a key part of the timetable for all students at Rose Hill; the programme was first introduced in 2009 for younger pupils and was quickly developed by Headmaster Neil Shaw. All year groups now enjoy a weekly outdoor education class.

Research has shown that children benefit from an element of 'risk' in learning, and learning in an outdoor environment helps them to think creatively, stimulating them in a way that sitting within the classroom does not. Discussing outdoor education, Headmaster Neil Shaw says 'we are totally committed to making outdoor learning part of school life here at Rose Hill Westonbirt School. It makes learning fun and the results have been quite staggering'.
